The pressures of success and growing up didn’t sit well with Cold Chisel. Things fractured on a European tour in 1983 and drummer Steve Prestwich was sacked. The writing was on the wall and Twentieth Century became their break-up album. Don Walker chose to record the album as live as possible on the stage of the Capitol Theatre with new producer Tony Cohen.

The band’s search for new challenges appeared on tracks like “Saturday Night” which combined disjointed elements into one seamless whole. “Sing To Me” is a heart wreching torch song while “Twentieth Century” is a wonderful summation of the madness of the early 1980s.  The album features “No Sense” a hyper-reggae track and “Hold Me Tight” which at less than two minutes may count as their most urgent rock track. Then there was “Flame Trees” – a Steve Prestwich tune that Walker added lyrics to - this is one of Australia’s most beloved songs. Twentieth Century was a summation of ten years together and, despite its weird birth, is possibly the band’s most subtle and sophisticated collection of songs.
